+ He pasado una de las tardes más divertidas de las últimas semanas. Seguramente porque he estado trabajando en mi primera tabla de skate, algo que llevaba deseando hacer desde hace meses y que hasta la fecha, por lo que sea, no había encontrado la ocasión de realizar.

+ Esto es tan sólo un boceto, una prueba para saber hasta qué punto me siento a gusto trabajando en ello, y me lo he pasado en grande!! El resultado ha superado por un lado las expectativas inmediatas, pues temía que el resultado final me desilusionara, y se ha quedado corto con lo que respecta a las expectativas a medio/largo plazo, ya que en el futuro quiero/puedo hacerlo mejor.

+ Mis intenciones se inclinan hacia el rollo old school, la estética 70´s californiana, combinando en cierta medida los diseños de los mini-longboards actuales con las tablas de entonces. Serán tablas para disfrutar del cruising y el carving, pura travesía, puro goce sobre tablas de roble o arce.

+ Que ganas de tener mi primera tabla con los ejes ruedas y rodamientos montados y poder probarla!

+ I've spent one of the funniest evenings in recent weeks. Probably because I've been working on my first skateboard, which was wishing to do for months and so far, for whatever reason, had not found the time to perform.

+ This is just a sketch, a test to see how I feel comfortable working on it, and I've had a great time! The result has exceeded expectations on the one hand immediately, fearing that the end result disappoint me, and has fallen short with regard to expectations in the medium / long term, because in the future I want / I can do better.

+ Desde que inicié el blog de Carballo e Estrela he tenido la ocasión de descubrir y conocer a mucha gente interesante. Gente apasionada por una labor o una actitud ante la vida, de distintos lugares del mundo e involucrados en diferentes disciplinas: fotografía, cocina, camping, ciclismo, diseño, artesanía etc... y todos ellos han ejercido sobre mi una importante influencia de cara a desarrollar y mantener el espíritu que intento aplicar a todo lo que hago.

+ Recientemente he decidido que durante el transcurso de 2012 enviaré como muestra de agradecimiento alguno de mis productos a alguna de la gente que es para mí fuente de inspiración.

+ En los próximos días una de mis casas-nido viajará desde mi taller hasta el cuartel general de Best Made Company en Brooklyn. Se trata de una revisión del mod. Castiñeiras 2012 que he creado especialmente para los chicos de Best Made, tomando la forma y el color de su logo como punto de partida y añadiendo únicamente el blanco y el color natural de la madera de pino como soporte y complemento estético.

+ La próxima primavera esta casita, pieza única que no será seriada ni se comercializará, colgará en la zona boscosa de Lumberland, a las afueras de N.Y. donde el staff de Best Made tiene su santuario personal.

+ Me hace muchísima ilusión.

+ Since I started the Carballo and Estrela blog I had the opportunity to discover and meet many interesting people. People who are passionate for a job or an attitude toward life, from around the world and involved in different disciplines: photography, cooking, camping, cycling, design, crafts etc ... and they have all exerted an important influence on the way to develop and maintain the spirit that I try to apply to everything I do.

+ I recently decided that during the course of 2012 I´ll send as a thank any of my products to some of the people that are for me a source of inspiration.

+ In the next few days one of my birdhouses will travel from my workshop to the headquarter of Best Made Company in Brooklyn. This is a review of the mod. Castiñeiras 2012 I created especially for Best Made guys, taking the shape and color of the logo as a starting point and adding only white and natural color of the pine wood to support and complement aesthetic.

+ The next spring this little house, a unique piece that will not be serialized or marketed, it will hang in the woods of Lumberland, outside of N.Y. where staff have their Best Made personal sanctuary.

+ I feel so thrilled about it.

+ He vuelto a por el roble que no me pude llevar en mi última visita a mi proveedor habitual de madera. Deambular por el almacén y seleccionar la madera que me voy a llevar es una de mis momentos favoritos del asunto. Me he llevado una partida pequeña, para realizar pruebas sobre dos proyectos: uno personal, de cuyo resultado final dependerá que tenga continuidad y se sume a los actuales productos de Carballo e Estrela, y otro nacido del encargo de un amigo.

+ Me he ido a por más madera. Quería pino y roble ( para un encargo de un amigo y nuevas ideas que verán la luz antes de la primavera ), pero el chico que me la sirve necesitaba salir urgentemente del almacén y sólo llevé pino para casas nido, comederos y un nuevo proyecto que estoy desarrollando estos días.

+ El taller huele a madera recién cortada.

+ Ya hay una remesa de tirachinas a punto de entrar en el horno, y a partir de ahora con cada tirachinas una bolsita de regalo con munición a base de bellotas recogidas personalmente del bosque. Cortesía de Carballo e Estrela.

+ Me he ido a por munición para mis tirachinas, y que mejor munición para un modelo de tirachinas de nombre "bellota" que el propio fruto del roble. La verdad es que van bien, aunque sólo en disparos a corta distancia, ya que el poco peso del fruto hace que la dirección del proyectil varíe.

+ No estaba seguro de poder encontrar muchas bellotas a comienzos del invierno, pero tras buscar una zona de robles descubrí que a poco que removiese la hojarasca el arsenal del que allí disponia era más que suficiente. Muchas estaban en mal estado y unas cuantas habían enraizado, así que con cuidado fui cogiendo las que necesitaba y en cinco minutos tenía mi bolsa llena.

+ Tengo mis tirachinas y mis bellotas. Ya no hay motivo para temer a los monstruos del bosque.

+ I went for my slingshot ammunition, and what better ammunition for a slingshot model name "acorn" that the very fruit of the oak. The fact is that´s a good choice, although only a short distance shots, as the light weight of the fruit makes the direction of the projectile varies.

+ I was not sure I could find many acorns in early winter, but after searching an area of oaks I found that little removed the leaves the available arsenal was more than enough. Many were in poor condition and a few had taken root, so I was carefully picking up the needed and five minutes later had my bag full.

+ El diseño formal está definido. Ahora estoy jugando con combinaciones cromáticas, viendo distintas posibilidades...es la parte más divertida del proceso.

+ De momento sólo he materializado dos de los bocetos. Cada uno de ellos llevará el nombre de algún grupo o canción dentro de la onda 60´s garage, revival o punk rock.

+ Este pasado fin de semana he estado exponiendo algunos de mis productos en el mercado de antigüedades y curiosidades de A Estrada. Ha estado bien, a pesar de la lluvia y el frío la asistencia de público fue suficiente y he disfrutado como un visitante más de las muchas cosas interesantes que allí se mostraban.

+ Lo que más me ha llamado la atención han sido las motos españolas e italianas y las herramientas antiguas.

Me compré tres pequeñas herramientas de relojero a las que les he buscado aplicación en mi taller a la hora de trabajar los tirachinas.

aestivalis, luridus y edulis.

+ En esta ocasion fuimos equipados para degustarlas tras recogerlas en el propio monte,

y además pudimos estrenar la primera tabla PIKI de Carballo e Estrela en su versión mini.

Pequeña, ligera e ideal como solución en picnis y camping.

+ Las preparamos con ajo, sal y pimienta. Muy ricas.

+ Una vez que todos los proyectos para este otoño en casas y comederos para pájaros han sido materializados y presentados es la hora de dejar espacio en el taller a otras ideas que llevo en mente desde hace varios meses.

+ Para ello me he ido a mi almacén de madera favorito en busca de un poco de buen fresno. Seleccionar con calma la madera que te vas a llevar y cortarla a la medida que te interesa es una de las partes más divertidas de todo el proceso.

+ Con un simple destornillador de estrella podemos abrir la casa por su base para su limpieza, ya que la madera de pino, a pesar de mostrar una resistencia y durabilidad que nos garantice nuestra caja nido por años, si es cierto que puede reaccionar a los cambios de temperatura y humedad generando moho en su interior. De todos modos con una única limpieza anual es suficiente, siempre esperando a que la época de cría pase. El otoño es una buena época para dejar nuestra casa nido libre de presencia de moho, así como restos de excrementos, parásitos o el posible cadáver de algún polluelo que no haya salido adelante.

+ Esta es la primera casa para pájaros que hice, y estas son las únicas herramientas que tenía entonces. Fue en Noviembre de 2007, hace ahora 4 años. Un día, de repente, se me ocurrió que podría ser buena idea hacer una casa nido para mi hijo Jorge, e ir con él una tarde al campo para colgarla en algún lugar que elegiríamos para ella y así poder volver a ese lugar frecuentemente, convirtiendo el hecho en la mejor excusa para salir de casa y pasar tiempo en contacto con la naturaleza con mayor frecuencia. Busque cajas de fruta en los contenedores de basura próximos a un supermercado cercano a casa y este fué el resultado.

+ Nunca colgamos esa casa. Evidentemente me di cuenta de que el resultado era mejorable, pero la conservo con cariño. Me recuerda el origen de Carballo e Estrela y simboliza todos los buenos deseos y todo el cambio de actitud vital que para mí y los mios anhelaba por aquel entonces. Deseos y actitud que cuatro años más tarde siguen más vivos que nunca.

+ This is the first birdhouse I made, and these are the only tools I had then. It was in November 2007, four years ago. One day, suddenly, I thought it might be a good idea to make a nest house for my son Jorge, and go with him one evening to the camp to hang it somewhere we would choose for it, so we can return to that place frequently, making the act in the best excuse to leave home and spend time in contact with nature more often. I looked for fruit boxes in the garbage cans next to a supermarket close to home and this was the result.

+ Never hang the house. Of course I realized that the result was improved, but I preserved it with love. This house remember me the origin of Carballo and Estrela and symbolizes all the good wishes and all the vital attitude change for me and mine at that time craved. Desires and attitudes that four years later still more alive than ever.

+ Después de esa primera casa vinieron muchas otras. Todas hechas con madera de caja de fruta. Siguiendo el proceso creativo-constructivo de "ensayo-error-corrección" fui mejorando los resultados lentamente, ya que durante algunos largos periodos dejaba de lado el asunto, hasta que en Octubre de 2010 construí la ultima casa hecha con cajas de fruta. Entonces supe que había llegado a un punto en que la cosa pedía un salto cualitativo y decidí que si quería seguir con esto debía hacer las cosas bien.

+ En Noviembre de 2010 materializo el modelo castiñeiras, claro deudor de la última casa-boceto hecha con caja de fruta. Por primera vez empleo madera buena y comienzo a comprar las herramientas que voy necesitando. Surge entonces Carballo e Estrela.

+ Este mes se cumple el primer aniversario de la intención de hacer de Carballo e Estrela un proyecto firme, humilde pero sólido. Y este mes es el elegido para sacar a la luz la segunda generación de modelos castiñeiras, los cuales irán apareciendo aquí a lo largo de estos próximos días.

+ No te lo pierdas.

Navaja y escala || Jackknife and scale

+ El otro día, como adelantaba en el anterior post, me pasé por la tienda de efectos navales de Marin para comprar los detalles que me faltaban para ultimar la escala para trepar árboles. Está totalmente inspirada en la escala de gatos utilizada en el mundo naval y que se emplea abordo para asistir a embarcaciones de menor tamaño, aunque la he adaptado a mis necesidades.

+ El hombre que lleva la tienda, al enseñarle mi escala me felicito por haberla rematado correctamente y me aseguró que no tendré problema para darle el uso que deseo. Con él estuve buscando los mosquetones que necesitaba para, una vez pasada la cuerda sobre una o dos ramas, fijarla a alguno de los peldaños y así poder trepar.

+ Lleva dos cuerdas que parten del último peldaño y cada una de ellas remata en un mosquetón, y estos a su vez se atan a un cordel largo y fino del que pende un plomo con el que, desde el suelo, poder lanzar y alcanzar las ramas desde las que iniciar la trepa.

+ Ahora solo resta probarla y ver si cumple todas las expectativas.

+ Además me compré una navaja de marinero. Me gustan desde que era un niño, cuando con mi amigo Kiko me perdía por las zonas portuarias de mi localidad. Recuerdo que por aquel entonces me preguntaba porque motivo estas navajas no tenían punta. La respuesta que mi imanación me daba, seguramente influenciada por el visionado de "Motín a bordo" una de mis pelis favoritas de todos los tiempos, era que no llevaban punta para en caso de iniciarse una pelea en alta mar entre marineros, estos no pudieran clavarse con facilidad sus navajas. El verdadero motivo es muy distinto, es una navaja empleada sobre todo para confeccionar redes de pesca, y la punta carece de funcionalidad.

+ Buscando nuevos lugares donde colocar una de mis cajas nido descubro este precioso ejemplar de Araucaria de la isla de Norfolk, una conífera de origen australiano, ( parece que Carballo e Estrela está destinado a vincularse de un modo u otro con Australia ), descubierta en 1774 por el marino James Cook, quién tras ver los bosques de esta especie en la isla del Pacífico que le da nombre, informó con premura al almirantazgo, y cuyos troncos, que pueden alcanzar los 70 metros de altura, fueron los mejores mástiles de la Real Armada inglesa.

+ El ramaje presenta una simetría asombrosa, creciendo por pisos en número de cinco y generando plantas pentagonales. Trepar y encaramarse hasta media altura para situar el nidal será sencillo para mi, aunque también lo será para alguien que lo descubra y quiera hacerse con él, pero a estas alturas de la película tengo muy claro que la posibilidad de que puedan robar alguna de las casas que voy colocando por ahí forma parte del juego, y lo acepto.

Vida despreocupada || Carelessly life

+ Tras varios días encerrado en el taller sentía necesidad de aire fresco y color verde. Jorge y Manuel prepararon el comedero para pájaros y tras elegirle árbol me dediqué al bello arte de tumbarme en la hierba a observar a mis hijos jugar despreocupadamente.

+ Un paseo hasta el viejo puente sobre el arroyo para comprobar que la tabla que pusimos a finales de verano sigue en su sitio, y al caer la tarde, cuando comenzaba a refrescar, nos movimos hasta la orilla del lago Castiñeiras para charlar sobre lo guay que sería dormir una noche allí y darles a los perros una buena ración de palos.

+ After several days locked in the workshop felt the need of fresh air and green. Jorge and Manuel prepared the bird feeder and after choosing the tree I spent the evening dedicated to the fine art of lying on the grass to watch my kids play carelessly.

+ A walk to the old bridge over the creek to check that the table we put at the end of summer still in place, and at dusk, when it began to cool, we moved to the shore of Lake Castiñeiras to talk about how great would be spend a night there and give the dogs a good portion of sticks.

+ Desde la ventana del taller de Carballo e Estrela puedo ver como el río Lérez desemboca en el océano Atlántico. Es un río fuertemente vinculado con mis orígenes y en su honor le pongo nombre al nuevo modelo Elida. Seis signos gráficos que adquieren la categoría de símbolos: tres hojas y tres estrellas. Mis padres y sus padres.

Comedero ++ || Bird feeder ++

+ En un principio el nuevo comedero en el que estaba trabajando tenía que tener tejado. Se trataba de un capricho o un empeño personal. Pero a medida que el diseño sobre papel se iba materializando el tejado comenzaba a molestarme, hasta el punto que he decidido prescindir de él. En el plano funcional no aporta nada, y en el formal interrumpía el juego de verticales y horizontales. Así que adiós tejado y hola diseño definitivo del comedero BUENAS TARDES PAJARILLO.

+ At first the new bird feeder in which I was working was to have roof. It was a whim or a personal commitment. But as the design on paper was materializing the roof was beginning to annoy me to the point that I decided to do without it. + Hoy me he dedicado a quitar lo que sobraba y añadir lo que faltaba al comedero "BUENAS TARDES PAJARILLO". Sobraba un poco de tejado. Era demasiado grande, pesaba mucho y restaba visibilidad. He añadido algunos dibujos que creo le hacían falta.
